New Delhi, January 9 (IANS). Keeping the body healthy and fit in the harsh winter is challenging. One has to face many physical problems due to cold wave, fog and melting. The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India has given easy suggestions to maintain good health in this season.

According to the ministry, choose seasonal and local food. Include grains like millet, jowar, maize, barley and ragi in your diet. Take milk, green vegetables and seasonal fruits. Eat hot and fresh food, use jaggery and ghee. Avoid cold things like ice cream or cold drinks. These small changes can make winter comfortable and healthy.

The ministry also advises to change lifestyle according to the weather. By following these regularly, one can not only stay fit in winter but also have better health throughout the year. Experts believe that adopting local and seasonal food also maintains harmony with the environment.

In these suggestions based on the principles of Ayurveda, special emphasis has been given on eating habits so that the body remains warm and the immunity remains strong. According to experts, give preference to seasonal and local food in winter. Be sure to include coarse grains like millet, jowar, maize, barley and ragi in your diet. Along with these, take milk, green vegetables and seasonal fruits. These nutritious elements provide energy to the body and help in fighting cold.

The ministry advises to choose freshly prepared food this winter. Make traditional things like jaggery and jowar a part of your diet. Jaggery keeps the body warm and is a good source of iron, while grains like jowar improve digestion and provide nutrition.

Also pay attention to the cooking method. Use right amount of oil or ghee in food in winter. Ghee gives strength and warmth to the body, and also strengthens the joints. Natural sweeteners like jaggery and honey are also beneficial. It increases body heat and strengthens immunity. Eating fresh and hot food improves digestion and reduces the risk of catching cold.

The most important advice is to avoid cold things. Avoid eating very cold food or drinks like ice cream, cold drinks or cold water from the refrigerator in winter. These can reduce body heat and increase problems like cold and cough.
