Ahead of the general elections in Bangladesh, several objectionable videos have surfaced on social media. In these videos, some clerics and religious speakers are seen making hate speeches against Hindus. They are appealing to people not to vote for Hindu or non-Muslim candidates. These statements have increased concerns about the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh.

‘It is haraam to vote for a Hindu’
In a viral video, a cleric is seen saying during a religious event that voting for any Hindu or “infidel” candidate is forbidden (haram) in Islam. This statement is being considered inflammatory and spoiling the atmosphere before the elections.

Threats to temples and ISKCON
In another video, some speakers are seen openly threatening Hindu temples and religious institutions. According to the video, they are talking about demolishing temples and statues. The ISKCON organization present in Bangladesh has also been mentioned.

Increase in violence in last few weeks
These videos have emerged at a time when there have been several attacks on members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh in recent times. Many people have died in these incidents, which has created an atmosphere of fear.

India expressed concern
The Government of India has expressed deep concern over these incidents. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that repeated attacks on minorities and their properties in Bangladesh are a matter of grave concern.

Demand for strict action
Randhir Jaiswal said that immediate and strict action should be taken in such cases. He also said that it is wrong to dismiss these attacks as personal feuds or political conflicts.

Youth dies while running away from crowd
In a recent incident, 25-year-old Mithun Sarkar died after being attacked by a mob over allegations of theft. To save himself he jumped into a canal but drowned. In the past few weeks, several Hindu civilians have been killed, including Moni Chakraborty, Rana Pratap Bairagi and Khokan Chandra Das. A case of Dipu Chandra Das being beaten to death has also come to light.
