New Delhi, January 18 (IANS). Electromagnetic spectrum has emerged as a critical domain of warfare along with the conventional battlefield and the SSS mantra of ‘Sense, Secure and Strike’ will play a vital role in gaining edge in the electromagnetic spectrum. This information was given by experts.
Addressing ‘DESCOM 2026’ in the national capital, Chief Guest Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, AVSM, Vice Chief of Integrated Defense Staff (Policy Planning and Force Development), Headquarters IDS, said that modern warfare is undergoing a transformation driven by rapid advancements in digital technology, autonomous systems, AI and networks and operations.
Addressing the gathering, he said, “At its core is the electromagnetic spectrum that we are all talking about today and it has emerged as an important domain of warfare along with traditional warfare domains such as land, air, sea, cyber and space.”
The electromagnetic spectrum is no longer just a supporting factor; With future conflicts becoming faster, more complex and more competitive, these are decisive factors in gaining an edge on the battlefield.
Experts say the defense forces will have to re-evaluate their spectrum requirement to maintain their operational superiority. Electronic warfare was used extensively in jamming and GPS spoofing during ‘Operation Vermillion’. Advanced electronic warfare capabilities can ensure future success.
According to Lieutenant General Vivek Dogra, SM, Signal Officer-in-Chief and Colonel Commandant, Signal Corps of the Indian Army, ‘Operation Sindoor’ has proved that no area is off limits.
“The electromagnetic spectrum has blurred boundaries. During ‘Operation Sindoor’, dual-use commercial technology has blurred the lines between civilian and military spectrum,” Dogra said.
Ashok Atuluri, Chairman, PHDCCI Defense and HLS Committee, said there is no dearth of talent, capability or funds.
“We just need the will to move forward and design, develop and manufacture technologically advanced combat systems in India itself. A lot of deep-tech funding has already been done through the new RDI (Research, Development and Innovation) fund launched by the government,” he said.
