Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his decision to repeal the MGNREGA Act, accusing him of giving priority to bureaucrats over the poor.

Speaking to the media on the issue of repeal of MGNREGA, Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “centralizing power, handing it over to the bureaucracy and leaving poor citizens to die of hunger”.

He alleged, “The purpose of MGNREGA was to hand over economic responsibility to unemployed rural citizens and provide minimum wages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not want this; he wants to centralize power and hand it over to the bureaucracy and leave poor citizens to die of hunger. With the amendment in the Act, the protection of the poor has been removed. That is why Congress is running a Save MGNREGA campaign across the country… The Prime Minister wants the entire country’s economy to be in the hands of Ambani and Adani. Go away while we are trying to help the poor.”

Rahul Gandhi also condemned the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the amended VB-G Ram-Ji Act.

The Congress MP today inaugurated the Rae Bareli Premier League organized by the Youth Sports Academy Rae Bareli at the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium.

The Congress MP is on a two-day visit to his parliamentary constituency Rae Bareli to address a public meeting and meet senior party leaders in protest against the repeal of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

Later today, Gandhi will hold a ‘MNREGA Chaupal’ (community meeting) at Rohaniya in Unchahar.

Rahul Gandhi will also inaugurate the works of MPLADS (Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme). He will also visit the residence of the Municipal Corporation Chairman.

After this, a meeting of the Congress MP with senior party leaders is scheduled at his guest house on the second day.

Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai said on Sunday that a massive program has been planned to protest against the new law. Congress will organize 30 mahapanchayats in Uttar Pradesh. Ajay Rai said that Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge can also attend some of these Mahapanchayats.

Earlier this month, the party had announced a nationwide three-phase agitation called “Save MGNREGA” to protest against the recently enacted VB-G Ram Ji Act by the Centre.
