Dhaka. Counting of votes continues on a war footing in Bangladesh after the historic general elections held on Thursday. Initial trends and results have started to clear the picture of power. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is currently maintaining a clear lead and has won 110 seats so far. At the same time, the alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has won 38 seats. Tariq Rehman’s dominance, majority figure close. BNP’s acting president and a strong contender for the post of Prime Minister, Tariq Rehman has won a landslide victory on both his seats. The magic number of 150 seats is mandatory for majority in the 300-member Parliament (Jati Sansad) of Bangladesh. Seeing the speed with which the results are coming, there is an atmosphere of celebration in the BNP camp.
Mohammad Yunus said- ‘Birth of new Bangladesh’
“Today a new Bangladesh is born,” said Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government, while speaking to the media after casting his vote in Dhaka. He described this election as a milestone for the democratic future of the country. Along with him, student leader Naheed Islam also voted and expressed hope of forming a stable government.
Sheikh Hasina’s tough stance: Demand to cancel elections
On the other hand, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has taken refuge in India, has completely rejected these elections. He issued a statement calling the entire process ‘fake’ and ‘unconstitutional’.
Demand for resignation: Hasina demanded the resignation of Mohammad Yunus, alleging that Awami League supporters were stopped from voting and this is a ‘voterless’ election.
Absence of Awami League: Due to cancellation of registration of Awami League by the Election Commission, their ‘Boat’ election symbol was missing in the election field this time.
Violence and clashes: Bombing in many areas
There were also reports of violence from many parts of the country during the elections:
Death: A leader Mohibuzzaman Kochi died in a violent clash between Jamaat and BNP workers outside a polling center in Khulna.
Bombing: In Munshiganj and Gopalganj areas, crude bombs were thrown outside polling stations, in which 3 people were injured.
India’s watchful eye
India has adopted a cautious stance on these elections. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India is waiting for the results. He clarified that only after the final results come, it will be seen what kind of mandate the people of Bangladesh have given.
