New Delhi, February 16 (IANS). Lack of blood (anemia) in the body causes problems like lethargy, fatigue, dizziness, weakness and breathlessness. To prevent this, it is beneficial to eat iron-rich foods daily. Regular consumption of nutritious things including spinach, beetroot, pomegranate, dates, jaggery, black gram, kidney beans and pulses will maintain energy and prevent anemia.
The National Health Mission has intensified a nationwide awareness campaign to eliminate anemia (blood deficiency). The main message of this campaign is, “Defeat Anemia, Adopt a Healthy Life.” Anemia is a problem that is especially common in women, children and pregnant women. It causes problems like fatigue, weakness, dizziness, breathlessness and stunted growth in children, but with the right diet, regular checkups and awareness, one can become anemia-free.
To avoid anemia, the most important thing is to take a balanced diet rich in iron, vitamin C and protein daily. Iron makes hemoglobin in the body, which carries oxygen in the blood. Vitamin C helps iron to be absorbed better in the body, while protein is essential for body repair and growth.
Iron rich foods like green leafy vegetables (spinach, fenugreek, mustard greens, bathua, amaranth, gram, kidney bean, soybean, black gram, jowar, millet, jaggery, beetroot, pomegranate, apple, dates) as well as vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables (amla, lemon, orange, seasonal, guava, kiwi, tomato, capsicum, green chilli) as well as protein rich foods like Consumption of moong, pigeon peas, lentils, urad, milk, curd, buttermilk, cheese, soya chunks, kidney beans, gram and seeds (almonds, cashews, raisins, walnuts, sesame, chia seeds, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds etc.) is beneficial.
According to experts, take vitamin C-rich fruit or lemon along with iron-rich food, so that the iron can be absorbed properly.
Do not drink tea or coffee immediately after meals, as they prevent the absorption of iron. Get hemoglobin checked every 3-6 months. Pregnant women and adolescent girls should take iron supplements as per doctor’s advice.
