India's mobile phone exports increased 127 times in the last decade: Ashwini Vaishnav

New Delhi, March 11 (IANS). India’s mobile phone exports have increased more than 127 times in the last decade to Rs 2 lakh crore in the financial year 2024-25, which was Rs 0.01 lakh crore in the financial year 2014-15. This information was given by the government in Parliament on Wednesday.

Answering a question in the Lok Sabha, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the reason for the sharp increase in exports of mobile phones is the government’s focus on electronics manufacturing with the help of campaigns like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

The objective of these policies is to create a complete electronics ecosystem for electronics production in the country.

According to the government, India has moved from being a net importer of mobile phones to a net exporter in the last 11 years.

“The country is now the second largest mobile manufacturing center in the world,” he said.

During the same period, the total production of electronic goods in India has increased almost six times from about Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to about Rs 11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25.

“Electronics exports have also increased almost eight times from Rs 0.38 lakh crore to about Rs 3.3 lakh crore,” the Union Minister said.

Vaishnav said India started electronics manufacturing with the production of finished products, and now the focus has shifted to the development of modules, sub-modules, components and even the raw materials, tools and machinery used in the manufacturing process.

The government has launched several schemes to strengthen domestic electronics manufacturing.

These include the Production-Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for large-scale electronics manufacturing and IT hardware, the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors and the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster Scheme.

The Minister informed that under the PLI scheme for IT Hardware, three approved applicants have set up manufacturing units in the state of Maharashtra, and all of them are Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Also told that global companies have also started manufacturing products like laptops and servers in India.
