Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the Indian government has given a big update on its efforts to bring back its citizens safely. Asim Mahajan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), said that since February 28, 2026, about 3,75,000 passengers have returned to India. Keeping in mind the security and operational needs, limited and non-scheduled flights are being operated between UAE and India to bring home the Indians stranded there.

What is the latest status of airlines and return of passengers?
The government and airlines are working together to evacuate Indians from Gulf countries. On Monday, March 23, 2026, around 95 flights are expected to operate from different airports of UAE to India. Apart from this, air services are also continuing from Oman and Saudi Arabia. However, the airspace of Kuwait and Bahrain is still closed, so Indian citizens present there are being helped to reach Saudi Arabia. Qatar Airways will also operate 8 to 10 special commercial flights to India on Monday.
How are the preparations for evacuating Indians from other affected areas?
The Ministry of External Affairs has made detailed arrangements for Indians stranded in different areas, details of which are given below:
Northern Sector: A total of 913 Indians have safely escaped from Iran via Armenia and Azerbaijan, many of whom have returned to India.
Seafarers: All Indian sailors deployed in the maritime area are said to be safe. More than 547 sailors have been brought back so far.
Kuwait & Bahrain: Citizens stranded in these countries are being brought from Al Qaysuma-Hafar Al Batin Airport in Saudi Arabia through Jazeera Airways.
Casualties: So far 6 Indians have lost their lives in this conflict and one civilian is reported missing.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also discussed over the phone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding global energy security and the implications of this conflict. The entire focus of the government is currently on safe evacuation and helping the citizens.
