Saudi Arabia has decided to grant transit visas for commercial trucks coming from Türkiye. This step has been taken due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to provide an alternative to sea freight transportation. Now Turkish trucks will be able to easily reach other Gulf countries via Saudi Arabia. With this new arrangement, the movement of goods will be much faster than before and the impact on trade will be reduced.
How will Turkish truck drivers benefit?
Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat has informed that after discussions with the Saudi government, truck drivers will be given a 15-day transit visa. This visa will be available to all those drivers who are carrying goods from Türkiye to Gulf countries. With the implementation of this system, dependence on sea routes will be reduced. Now trucks will be able to reach Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries via Syria and Jordan in just three to four days.
What is the main reason for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz?
The Strait of Hormuz was closed following attacks on Iran by the US and Israel in early March 2026. This sea route is considered very important for trade and oil supply around the world. Due to its closure, the movement of ships has stopped. In view of this crisis, Turkey and Saudi Arabia together have found this road route so that fertilizers and other essential goods can be imported from countries like Qatar on time.
