The ongoing conflict between Israel, America and Iran shows no signs of abating. It seems that no one is able to guess the stance of US President Donald Trump; One day he hints at reducing enmity, and the next day he goes back on his word. Since the conflict began, Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz. Since seaborne imports through this route have been disrupted, many countries are now facing shortages of oil and gas. India also imports a variety of goods through this important sea corridor—from dry fruits to petrochemical products. The disruption in imports of petrochemical products is impacting various industries, including those that impact our everyday lives. This impact may also be felt in your bedroom, as condom prices are expected to increase.
With reduced arrivals of petrochemical products, goods made using these materials are expected to be costlier in the market. To mitigate the impact of this situation on the common man, the government—on Thursday—waived customs duties on 41 different types of petrochemical products. However, companies in this industry are still worried. The condom manufacturing sector—an industry deeply linked to the lifestyle of the common man—is currently in the grip of a palpable restlessness. Due to disruption in the supply of raw materials used in their production, rising prices are expected to impact the retail prices of condoms.
The impact will be felt at both wholesale and retail levels
Given the irregular supply of petrochemical products, silicone oil and ammonia, there is widespread speculation that goods made from these materials will become expensive. Since these same products are used to make condoms, the impact of the price increase is expected to be felt at both the wholesale and retail levels. Industry sources say that traders from this sector—which is worth more than ₹8,000 crore in the country—have clearly stated that ammonia prices may increase by 40–50 per cent. As a result, the price of silicone oil is also likely to increase.
Silicone oil acts as a lubricant
Condoms are coated with silicone oil, which acts as a lubricant. The challenges currently facing this industry may also impact the government’s family planning program. Additionally, disruptions in the supply of PVC sheets, aluminum foil and packaging materials are sure to increase prices. On the other hand, logistical problems also remain; The movement of goods through sea routes has been affected, and transit time for sea cargo has increased from one week to three weeks.
Government took steps to provide relief
In a notification issued on Thursday, the Finance Ministry announced that custom duty on 41 essential petrochemical items has been reduced to zero. The government has implemented this measure for a period of three months—specifically from April 2, 2026 to June 30, 2026. This initiative was taken to provide relief to the common citizens. Through this move, the government aims to benefit various manufacturing sectors like plastics, packaging, textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and automotive parts.
