New Delhi. Taking an important step towards India’s first fully digital census, PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday completed his self-enumeration for the first phase (House Listing and Housing Census) of Census 2027. The achievement was announced by the official handle of Census of India, which expressed gratitude to Mishra for his active participation and cooperation in this important national work. His timely move is being seen as a strong message from the highest levels of the administration, encouraging citizens to participate in the process.
The first phase of Census 2027 started on April 1, 2026. For the first time in the history of Indian census operations, the government has launched a convenient ‘Digital Self-Enumeration’ facility.
This facilitates citizens to submit their household details online before the houses are verified by census officials.
The self-enumeration portal is currently open in various states and Jammu and Kashmir in a phased manner.
In the initial phase, this includes eight states including Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Delhi, and Jammu and Kashmir.
A self-counting period of 15 days has been set before the 30-day door-to-door survey in each area.
By completing the self-census, residents directly contribute to producing accurate and reliable data on housing conditions, household amenities and assets.
This information forms the basis of effective planning, inclusive development programs and evidence-based governance. Officials have emphasized that the digital option makes the process faster, more transparent and accessible to more people.
The portal is available in multiple languages and uses secure authentication through mobile numbers.
Census officials have urged all eligible citizens to complete their self-enumeration as soon as possible by logging into the portal.
