New Delhi . Amid the ongoing tussle over the formation of the new government in Tamil Nadu, senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has given a big statement on the situation of no party or alliance getting a clear majority in the assembly elections. In a post made on social media platform X, he clarified the constitutional responsibilities of the Governor. He said that if any political party or alliance does not get absolute majority in the assembly elections, it is the duty of the Governor to invite the leader of the largest party in the House to form the government. “If no political alliance or party gets absolute majority in the Assembly elections, what is the responsibility of the Governor? The leader of the largest party by number of elected members should be called to form the government. This is a political rule and parliamentary tradition,” Chidambaram wrote on Twitter.
He said that the Assembly is the proper platform where the leader of the concerned party can prove that he has the support of the majority. In this context, he referred to the historic decision of the Supreme Court in 1994. [1994 (3) एससीसी 1] Also mentioned. The Congress leader further said that he appreciated the political parties in Tamil Nadu who clarified this rule and emphasized on it.
Let us tell you that this time no party has got absolute majority in Tamil Nadu. Actor-politician Vijay’s party ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) has won 108 seats, but it still needs the support of at least 10 more MLAs to form the government. Due to lack of majority, the Governor has not yet given Vijay the opportunity to form the government.
At the same time, Congress has already formally announced its support to Vijay’s party TVK for government formation.
