Bhubaneswar, May 11 (IANS). Opposition parties Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress on Monday targeted the state government over allegations of deteriorating law and order situation in Odisha.

In the press conference held at BJD headquarters, the main opposition party BJD alleged that the incidents of violence are increasing day by day in the state.

Citing the violent incidents that took place in the last 24 hours, the party said that law and order in Odisha has completely broken down and the failure of the Home Department has been clearly exposed.

Party spokesperson and media coordinator Dr. Lenin Mahanty said that the government has completely failed to establish rule of law in the state.

He alleged that due to the negligence and apathy of the ‘double engine government’, several serious incidents have taken place in Dhenkanal, Hinjili, Kanas, Balianta and Balipatna in the last one week.

Mahanty said that due to the government’s inaction, the police system has become weak, and many police stations are functioning like BJP offices.

BJD student wing president Ipsita Sahu alleged that five horrific incidents have happened in 24 hours under the current government.

He said that such incidents were never seen before in the history of independent India.

Sahu claimed that state Director General of Police Y. B. Khurania has also admitted that common people are feeling unsafe.

He alleged that the BJP government has completely failed to handle law and order.

Here, Congress workers on Monday gheraoed the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate headquarters and demonstrated against the increasing incidents of violence and crime in the state.

The Congress also referred to the mob lynching of a Railway Protection Force (GRP) jawan on May 7.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhakta Charan Das alleged that the Congress will continue the struggle against the ever increasing crimes in the state.

He said that the government and the Chief Minister are not paying attention to these serious incidents and the police are being accused of protecting the criminals.

Congress also claimed that many criminals are spoiling the atmosphere by joining BJP, RSS and VHP.

The opposition also said that the law and order situation in the state has become so bad that even Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari had to warn against following ‘Raj Dharma’.
