Mumbai, June 9 (IANS). In a major change in the administrative structure, the Maharashtra government has reorganized various ministerial departments of the state. In the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, it was decided that the number of administrative departments will be increased from 33 to 45.

According to the government, this step has been taken with the aim of increasing administrative efficiency, speeding up the decision process and effective implementation of welfare schemes. Under this restructuring, many sub-departments will be given the status of independent departments.

Chief Minister Fadnavis has described this policy as based on the concept of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ and ‘Ease of Living’. The government believes that this will improve coordination in the governance system and work with regional agencies can be done more effectively.

The ministry previously had 33 departments functioning, many of which contained two to three sub-departments within the departments. Due to different sub-departments under the same department head, there were difficulties in distribution of human resources and administrative functioning.

Under the new structure, sub-departments will be made separate departments under independent secretaries. Each new department will also be provided with its own independent administrative structure, cash branch and registration branch.

The government has clarified that no new posts will be created in this restructuring. Only the existing sanctioned and vacant posts will be redistributed proportionately to the new departments.

The official notification related to this change will be issued by the Administrative Reforms, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Reforms sub-department.

Further, the Cabinet has also approved amendments to the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016. This amendment pertains to the final approval of new colleges, new faculty, courses, subjects and expansion for the academic year 2026–27.

Along with this, amendments have also been approved in the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 in line with the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, so that there is uniformity in the tax provisions of the state and the Centre.

The Cabinet has also approved amendments to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Act, 1961, under which the borrowing limit of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation will be increased.

The government has already approved a loan of Rs 6,000 crore for Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, which is being used to acquire land for the Purandar airport project.
