Washington. US President Donald Trump announced that the US and Iran have completed a deal. Under this deal, the Strait of Hormuz will reopen and the US Navy blockade will end. The US President called it a major success after months of fighting. This had a severe impact on the global energy market and created fears of a major regional war. President Trump said in a post on Truth Social, “The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now done. Congratulations everyone!”
The announcement came at a time when the world’s attention was on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large part of the world’s maritime oil trade passes. The Strait of Hormuz has been a center of tension between Washington and Tehran for several months. Energy prices are fluctuating around the world due to disruptions in shipping.
The US President said that he is approving the reopening of the international sea route and the removal of the US blockade.
He wrote, “I fully approve the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the US is going to immediately lift the naval blockade. Ships around the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow.”
In another post, Trump described the agreement as a historic diplomatic success. He wrote, “This great agreement will bring peace and security to the entire region. Many presidents have tried to make peace with Iran and all have failed before me. For the first time, the leaders of the region have a President who can help them achieve real peace. Once the agreement is signed on Friday, with the opening of the strait to remove sea mines, oil will once again flow in both directions for the benefit of the region and the entire world!”
However, the US President did not reveal the details of the agreement nor has the White House shared any information related to the deal. The White House post did not mention key issues that have long been a point of difference between Washington and Tehran. These include sensitive topics like Iran’s nuclear program and the sanctions imposed on it by America.
However, Trump’s statements show that the main issue of the agreement between the two countries is to resume freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and remove obstacles to commercial shipping.
Several international media reported that the US and Iran were close to an agreement after weeks of talks with negotiators and mediators. According to The Wall Street Journal, US and Iranian officials have indicated that a formal signing of the deal is expected later this week and that reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade are key parts of the arrangement.
The newspaper reported that both sides have agreed to an interim framework aimed at ending hostilities and creating space for further talks.
The Washington Post similarly reported that the agreement would end the US blockade and reopen the strait, while leaving other major issues for future negotiations. The newspaper said discussions on Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief are expected to continue in a separate phase of talks.
The New York Times reported that the agreement was expected to stop the fighting, reopen the strait, and lift the blockade, while nuclear-related matters would be deferred to future negotiations. American media described this agreement as a ceasefire arrangement which can pave the way for major talks between the two countries.
Trump presented the deal as proof that his administration has succeeded in places where previous US presidents had fallen short.
