Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular, but some questions still arise. The main concern is whether EVs are more prone to fire than petrol or diesel cars. EV fire incidents often make headlines on social media and the internet, causing panic among people; However, building a complete picture based on a few isolated incidents can be misleading.

Experts say that fire in vehicles can occur due to many reasons, such as technical faults, accidents, lack of proper maintenance or external reasons. Therefore, it is important to understand the real data and experts’ opinions on the matter. If you’re considering buying an electric car or are unsure about the safety of an EV, this information may be helpful.

What the statistics say: EV or petrol cars – which is safer?

Contrary to popular belief, several international studies have shown that petrol and diesel vehicles are more prone to fire than electric vehicles. The main reason for this is the fuel that catches fire very quickly in traditional vehicles. In contrast, electric cars have battery packs and multiple layers of safety technologies; Modern EVs have battery management systems that continuously monitor battery temperature and performance.

If an abnormal situation arises, the system reacts immediately. This is why EVs are generally considered safe during normal use. However, as with any technology, risks cannot be completely eliminated, but it would be wrong to call EVs unsafe based only on fire incidents.

What is the biggest difference in fire incidents?

According to experts, the nature of fire in EV and petrol cars is different. Fires in petrol vehicles often occur due to fuel leakage or engine related problems. Conversely, if an electric vehicle’s battery fails, the fire may be more difficult to control. This is why manufacturers are constantly investing in battery safety. Modern EVs come equipped with robust battery housing, thermal protection and multiple layers of safety features. Additionally, regular servicing and correct charging habits also enhance safety. Experts believe that safety protocols are equally important for both petrol and electric vehicles. Overall, the available data suggest that the risk of EV fire is not as high as commonly believed. Therefore, it is important to understand the facts and correct information before taking any decision.
