New Delhi, June 30 (IANS). The central government on Tuesday approved the reappointment of Ravi Aggarwal as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on contract basis for the next six months.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Agarwal’s new tenure, which will be effective from July 1 to December 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The ACC’s approval of Agarwal’s proposal to continue as chief of the apex direct tax administration body has ensured continuity in the functioning of the CBDT.

The order said the re-appointment has been made as per the general terms and conditions applicable to re-employed officers of the Central Government and with relaxation in recruitment rules.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the reappointment of Ravi Aggarwal as Chairman, CBDT. This appointment has been made on contract basis for a period of six months (from July 1 to December 31) or until further orders – whichever is earlier. This appointment has been made under the general conditions applicable to re-appointed Central Government officers and in relaxation of the recruitment rules,” the government order said.

Aggarwal, a 1988 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Income Tax cadre, was appointed Chairman of CBDT in June 2024, replacing Nitin Gupta.

The CBDT, under the Department of Income of the Ministry of Finance, is the largest policy making body of the Income Tax Department, headed by the Chairman and consisting of up to six members holding the rank of Special Secretary to the Government of India.

This organization is responsible for implementing direct tax laws, formulating tax policy, strengthening enforcement of rules and improving services to the taxpayer.

This reappointment has come at a time when a good increase in direct tax collection is being seen.

According to the Income Tax Department, the net direct tax collection during the period from April 1 to June 17 in the current financial year has increased by 14.64 percent year-on-year to Rs 5.21 lakh crore.
