Thrissur, June 30 (IANS). The bodies of a 30-year-old woman and her newborn baby were found in a lodge room in Kerala’s Thrissur city on Tuesday. The police have started a detailed investigation into the case.
The deceased has been identified as Jyoti (30), a resident of Thrissur district. According to preliminary police investigation, the woman may have died due to complications after delivery. However, police say that many aspects of the case are still not clear.
As part of the investigation, an auto rickshaw driver, who is said to be a friend of the woman, is being detained and interrogated.
According to the police, Jyoti was staying in room number 108 of a private lodge in the city at around 2:30 pm on June 27. He was brought there by an auto rickshaw driver, whom the lodge staff already knew.
Lodge staff told investigators that they were not aware of the woman’s pregnancy when she took the room.
Police said they became concerned when the woman was not responding to repeated phone calls. After this the auto rickshaw driver reached the lodge to get his information.
When there was no response despite knocking on the door of the room, he informed the lodge management. After this the management informed the police.
Police and Fire and Rescue Service teams reached the spot.
The room was locked from inside, so after several attempts the officers had to break the door and enter inside. Upon entering the room, both the woman and the newborn baby were found dead.
Investigators believe that the woman gave birth to the child in the room of the lodge itself.
Police suspect that the woman may have died due to excessive bleeding or some other medical complication arising after delivery. However, the actual cause of death will be known only after the post mortem report comes.
Police are also investigating the relationship between Jyoti and the auto rickshaw driver. It is also being ascertained why she was living alone in the lodge in the last stage of her pregnancy.
The room has been sealed for forensic examination and both the bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Police say that further action will be taken on the basis of post-mortem report and other forensic evidence.
