Chandigarh. A horrific accident took place on Saturday evening near ‘The Fern’ in Industrial Area Phase-2, Chandigarh. Here an old two-storey building suddenly collapsed and 2 people died and 4 others were seriously injured after being buried under the debris. Chandigarh administration has issued orders for a magisterial inquiry into this entire incident. Giving detailed information about the incident, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nishant Kumar Yadav said that renovation work was going on in this two-storey building on Saturday evening, when it suddenly collapsed. At the time of the accident, workers and the owner of the building were present inside and a total of six people got trapped in the debris.
Immediately after receiving the information, the administration started a large-scale rescue operation, in which the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team along with the local police and administrative teams also took charge. After this complex rescue operation that lasted for more than 5 hours:
In the initial phase, 4 injured people were safely taken out from the debris and immediately taken to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) located in Sector-32.
Two other people buried under the debris could be pulled out later, but by then they had died.
To find out the exact cause of the accident, the Deputy Commissioner has instructed the SDM (East) to hand over a magisterial inquiry. The Building Branch of the Estate Office and the Engineering Department of Chandigarh Administration will also provide technical support in this high level investigation.
DC Nishant Kumar Yadav said that this incident is a serious warning regarding the safety of old and dilapidated buildings. In view of this, strict instructions have been issued to the Building Branch of the Estate Office to survey all such unsafe residential, commercial and industrial buildings in the entire city and identify them and take appropriate punitive action. Along with this, the administration has also appealed to the common citizens that if they see any dilapidated or unsafe building around them, then they should immediately inform the administration.
Despite this major accident, no FIR has been registered legally till now. Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur clarified that the police has not yet received any written complaint from any party regarding this incident.
The SSP said that the people who lost their lives in the debris were the caretakers/owners of that building, due to which their family members have not lodged any complaint with the police. According to police officials, if any official complaint is received from any party or department in future, then as per the rules, a case will be immediately registered and legal action will be taken.
