Dhaka, 24 September (IANS). Former Bangladesh Food Minister Qamarul Islam has been sent by the court on five days police remand. He is accused of killing Jute merchant Mohammad Moir during the anti -incumbency protests in July last year. Local media gave this information on Wednesday.
In addition, the court showed ‘arrest’ in another murder case during the same protest of former Awami League MP Mohammad Suleman Salim.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadekur Rahman issued this order after hearing the petitions of police and defense lawyers.
According to reports, Manul Islam Khan Pulak, the investigating officer of Shahbag police station, sought a 10 -day remand of Kamarul and submitted an application to show Salim to ‘Arrested’ in the murder case.
During the hearing, Kamarul’s lawyer, Morstion Hussain Shaheen opposed the remand.
Bangladesh’s leading newspaper, The Business Standard quoted Shaheen, “He is a freedom fighter and is 76 years old. He is suffering from many diseases, and also a small food and drink problem. This is the 23rd case against him. He is a cancer and not in a position to be taken on remand. His health can be said that he can be said to be a serious event.”
Shaheen argued that his client was having trouble due to repeated appearance in court.
The lawyer argued, “He should be questioned at the gate of the jail. Also, he was not even MPs from the area concerned. How can the same person be present in different areas at the same time?”
Police arrested Kamarul from Uttara of Dhaka on November 18 last year. There are several allegations against him, including the murder of Jute merchant Mohammad Moir in Shahbag during the protests in July last year.
On the other hand, Salim was detained on 14 November 2024 in Gulshan area of the capital in separate murder cases involving the same protest.
In a separate development, on Wednesday, the Bangladeshi police arrested Ajay Car Khok, the leader of the Awami League and former general secretary of the party’s student branch student league.
Quoting a police source, Bangladesh’s leading newspaper Jugantor said he was arrested for holding a procession for Awami League.
These latest developments have come to light under the ongoing action on the leaders of the Awami League and party officials under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
Analysts believe that the incident is a major political revenge action being carried out by the Younus government, as several cases were registered against former Prime Minister Hasina, her party members and officials working during their tenure soon after she was removed from her post in August 2024.
