New Delhi, 24 September (IANS). Nowadays, along with cholesterol, the term triglyceride is also often heard. Many people consider it to be another name for cholesterol, but in fact it is different and can also become a major cause of heart diseases.
Triglyceride is a type of fat present in our blood. When we eat food and the body does not use calories immediately, the excess calorie accumulates as a triglyceride in the fat cells. It becomes a source of energy when needed.
The normal level of triglyceride is lower than 150 mg per deciliter. The boundary line is considered to be 150–199 mg per deciliter, high levels 200–499 mg per decolure and much higher levels above 500 mg per deciliter. Living continuously high triglyceride increases the risk of heart diseases, strokes, obesity, fatty liver and diabetes manifold.
Many people think that only oily food increases triglyceride, but actually sugar, maida and sweet drinks are its biggest reasons. High triglyceride can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as much as LDL cholesterol or even more. It is also a sign of type-2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Prolonged more triglyceride accumulation is at risk of fatty liver and liver failure in severe cases. Its level can also be high due to genetic reasons.
The level of triglyceride does not appear often and the person may feel normal. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct lipid profile test from time to time. Exercise and the right lifestyle helps reduce triglyceride. Consumption of alcohol increases it rapidly, while omega-3 fatty acids such as linseed, walnuts and fish oil are effective in reducing it.
Ayurvedic remedies are also helpful. Taking Triphala powder with lukewarm water at night improves digestion. Garlic, Arjun’s bark decoction and fenugreek seeds are helpful in reducing triglyceride and cholesterol every morning. Green tea and cinnamon reduce excess body fat due to antioxidant properties. Yoga and Pranayama, such as Kapalabhati, Anulom-Vilom and Surya Namaskar, are superior to fat balance.
Lifestyle changes are also necessary. Reduce sugar and sweet drinks, distance away from fried and packaged food. Eat more green vegetables, whole grains and fruits. Walk or yoga of at least 5 days 30 minutes a week. Avoid smoking and alcohol, get enough sleep and try to reduce stress.
