Cough Syrup Deaths India: 22 days, 6 innocent corpses, 1 death in Rajasthan and government is waiting for the report. In Chhindwara, innocent children who died due to kidney failure found bottles of suspected cough syrup. In Rajasthan too, after the death of a child, 19 batch cuff syrup was banned. But Madhya Pradesh Health Minister and Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla still says that the talk of phlegm syrup is completely baseless.
The question arises that when the syrup has been sent in the investigation, how can the minister say ‘baseless’? Between September 4 and September 26, 6 innocent people lost their lives. All children had early symptoms of cold, cough and fever. Then suddenly the kidney failed. Children were not admitted to the government hospital in Parasia and they were shifted directly to Nagpur. Now the government is saying that this is not a disease, but national agencies like NCDC and IDSP are engaged in investigation. Is this just a coincidence?
By the time the report comes, how many more corpses will fall?
In the name of investigation, Lipa granddaughter and minister’s rhetoric that the situation is under control, let the report come, the syrup did not die. Hearing all this, 6 families were ruined. The Rajasthan government immediately banned 19 batch of syrup after the death of a child. But in Madhya Pradesh, where deaths occurred more, the syrup has not been banned till now, only ‘temporary restrictions’ is being talked about.
Is the life of children so cheap?
Doctors have said that there is a possibility of mixing suspicious drugs, samples have been taken, investigation is on. But where is the strict action till then? Why not make the names of these syrup brands public? Why did not the responsible medical store and manufacturing companies have registered an FIR?
Negligence or collusion?
The matter is serious. If the medicine is the cause of the death of children, then it is not just a medical mistake, equal to murder. And if the government is hiding the name of the syrup brands despite the investigation, then the question is not only on doctors, but also on policy-makers and administrative systems.
The demand arises that the names of suspected syrup brands should be made public, all cuff syrup should be investigated immediately and strict action should be taken against the guilty companies, justice and compensation should be given to the families of the dead children and strictness on the sale of OTC (over-the-counter) syrup in the state. Also, the accountability of officers sitting in the health department should be decided.
Now is the time of strict action, not hollow statements. The lives of the children have gone, even if the government is not awake, the next corpse will rise from someone else’s house. Will it be said then it is baseless?
