The Government of India has implemented a new rule to reduce cash transactions on toll plaza and promote digital payments. Now vehicles that will not have fastag will be charged at different rates to give toll.
The government has notified the National Highway Fees (Determination Rate and Recovery) (Third Amendment) Rules 2025, which will be applicable across the country from 15 November 2025.
According to the new rule, if a vehicle reaches the toll plaza without a fastag, the fee will be different depending on the medium of payment. Giving in cash is doubled, while on UPI or any other digital mode, there will be only 1.25 times a fee.
For example, if the normal toll of a vehicle is ₹ 100, then it will have to be given ₹ 200 on the cash, while on the UPI, ₹ 125 will have to be paid. At the moment, both cash and digital were being charged double the fee, which has now been replaced.
According to the Transport Ministry, this step will bring transparency in toll collection, the jam will be less and people’s travel time will be saved. The government aims to fully implement digital payments on toll plazas across the country so that every vehicle can pass fast.
