Lucknow, Amrit Vichar: Magh Amavasya is also called Mauni Amavasya. According to the Panchang, Amavasya will last from 12:03 am on 17th January till 1:21 am on 18th January, hence bathing and donation will take place in the morning on 18th January.
Astrologer SS Nagpal told that this year on Mauni Amavasya, an auspicious combination of Harshan Yoga and Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga is taking place. Along with this, Shivvas Yoga is also being formed, due to which this day is considered very fruitful from spiritual point of view. On this day, there will be Purvashadha Nakshatra, Moon will be situated in Sagittarius, while all four planets Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars will form a conjunction in Capricorn. Along with this, Ardhodya Yoga will also be created. In Skanda Purana, this yoga has been described as extremely virtuous. It is believed that by taking bath, donating and worshiping in this yoga, one gets manifold virtuous results.

Worship and donation done on the day of Mauni Amavasya brings peace to the evils related to Rahu, Ketu and Saturn. According to astrology, this day is considered especially auspicious for removing planetary defects. On this day, devotees take bath in holy rivers and observe a fast of silence throughout the day. Worship of Peepal tree along with Lord Vishnu on Mauni Amavasya has special significance. It is believed that by remaining silent on this day and not using harsh words one attains the status of a sage. Donating sesame, sesame oil, amla, blanket and clothes etc. on the day of Mauni Amavasya is considered especially auspicious. Such donation brings positive energy and prosperity in life.
