Most of us have a habit of looking in the mirror first thing in the morning. Whether it’s getting our hair done or simply looking at our reflection, we often wonder: what could go wrong? But, according to Vastu Shastra, this small habit can spoil your entire day.
The face shows the dullness of the night
The principles of Vastu say that when we wake up from sleep, our body is filled with lethargy and negative energy. You may have noticed that in the morning, one’s face often looks a little puffy and lifeless. The moment you look in the mirror, those negative waves enter your body again through your eyes. As a result, the entire day is spent feeling heaviness and irritability.
It’s better to remember God than stare at yourself
In the scriptures, the early morning hours—especially the time around *Brahma Muhurta*—are considered the most sacred time of the day. According to religious texts, the first thing one should do upon waking up is to remember one’s *Ishta Dev* (one’s chosen deity) or look at one’s palms.
Importance of looking at palms
While looking at the palms, it is advisable to chant this mantra: “Karagre Vasate Lakshmi; Karamadhe Saraswati; Karamule Stitho Brahma; Prabhate Kardarshanam.” It means: “Goddess Lakshmi resides at the tips of the fingers; Goddess Saraswati resides in the middle of the palm; and Lord Brahma (or Vishnu) resides at the bottom of the palm. Therefore, the first thing you should do when you wake up in the morning is look at your palms.” When you look in the mirror, instead of connecting with this divine energy, you connect with your physical illusion—which is symbolized by *moh-maya* (worldly attachments and illusions) in spirituality.
Is the mirror opposite the bed?
If a dressing table is placed right in front of your bed—in such a way that the first thing you see when you open your eyes is your own reflection—then it is considered a major *Vastu defect* (deficiency). From a religious point of view, it is believed that when we sleep, a subtle part of our soul moves out of the body; A mirror can confuse or distract this energy. This increases tension and discord within the house.
So, what to do when you wake up?
Cover the mirror: If there is a mirror in your bedroom and it cannot be removed, cover it with a clean curtain or white cloth before sleeping at night. By doing this he is unable to absorb negative energy.
Admire sacred images: Place a picture of a deity, the rising sun, or chirping birds in your room in a place where it is the first thing you notice when you wake up in the morning. In the scriptures this practice has been called *Mangal Darshan* (an auspicious darshan).
Start the day by looking at your palms: Before you get out of bed, look at your palms and gently stroke them across your face. This allows the positive energy present in your hands to flow into your body.
Look in the mirror only after you’ve washed your face: It’s best to look in the mirror only after you’ve freshened up—ideally after showering, or at the very least, after rinsing your eyes with cool water. According to spiritual beliefs, after washing with water the aura of the body becomes clean and pure.
