The company’s first car could be a rebadged Chery Jetour T2 SUV, which could be launched under the new JSW brand.
JSW Motors is preparing to enter the Indian passenger vehicle market by the end of this year. The company will start its cars with a new energy vehicle (NEV). The official launch of the brand is expected to take place during the festive season 2026, while bookings for the first model may begin from November 2026. Its starting price is likely to be more than Rs 35 lakh (ex-showroom). Customer deliveries may begin in late 2026 or early 2027. The model seen recently during road testing shows that the company’s first car is almost ready for launch and its testing is going on in the final stages.
According to reports, the first model from JSW Motors could be a rebadged version of the Chery Jetour T2. JSW also has a major investment in the local operations of MG Motor India. The Jetour T2 is a boxy lifestyle SUV, known for its off-road design, electrified powertrain and 5-seater cabin. Its length is 4,785 mm and wheelbase is 2,800 mm. It gets design elements like wide and tall body design, large front, thick body cladding, large wheel arches and side-opening tailgate.
In the international market, Jetour T2 is available in both petrol and plug-in hybrid options. The petrol model gets a 2.0-litre turbo engine, while the T2 i-DM plug-in hybrid has a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, electric motor and 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. Considering the new energy vehicle strategy of JSW Motors, the plug-in hybrid version is considered more suitable for India.
The T2 i-DM available in foreign markets has a 26.7 kWh battery. This SUV can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes. According to the company, it can run more than 100 km in electric mode on a single charge, while its total driving range can be up to 1,200 km when combined with petrol and battery. The second model of JSW Motors can target the price segment of Rs 18 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, which will enable the company to reach more customers.
After this, two to three new models are likely to be launched in the first year itself. The company’s long term plan is to launch 15 new energy vehicles in the next 4 years. That means, once the product launch process starts, the company can introduce a new model approximately every three months. Prices for the future lineup of JSW Motors could start around Rs 10 lakh and go up to above Rs 30 lakh.
All these vehicles will be produced in a new 300-acre manufacturing facility to be built in Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. In the initial phase, the annual production capacity of this plant will be 5 lakh units, which can be further increased in future. The company will also develop a strong supplier network around the plant, which will increase the availability of local parts, reduce production costs and make the supply chain more robust. The company can launch not only electric cars but also vehicles with hybrid and other electrified powertrains depending on the market demand and government policies.
