Kathmandu. There was a stir in Nepal’s politics today when the police arrested former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli from his residence. This action has been taken just the next day after the swearing-in of the new Prime Minister Balen Shah, due to which a new era of accountability seems to be starting with the change of power in the country. Arrest made from Bhaktapur residence: In the early hours of Saturday morning, a special team of Nepal Police raided the house of KP Oli in Gundu, Bhaktapur and took him into custody. In this series, former Home Minister Ramesh Writer has also been arrested from Suryavinayak area at around 5 am in the morning.
Gen-Z Protest and case of 77 deaths
This entire action has been taken on the basis of investigation into the violent demonstrations of ‘Gen-Z’ (young generation) that took place last year.
Serious negligence: The inquiry commission headed by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, in its report, has accused the Oli government of “serious negligence”.
Loss of life and property: During these protests, 77 people lost their lives and property worth billions of rupees was destroyed in the clashes between police and protesters.
Ignoring Intelligence: According to the report, officials had already received warnings of possible violence, but the government did not take appropriate steps.
PM Balen Shah’s big action
Balen Shah chaired a cabinet meeting soon after taking oath as Prime Minister. In this meeting, it was decided to implement the report of the inquiry commission with immediate effect.
Allegation: KP Oli is accused of running away from Kathmandu instead of fulfilling his responsibility when the country was burning. Now a case will be filed against them, in which the punishment can be up to 10 years in jail.
High alert across the country
After Oli’s arrest, security arrangements have been made extremely tight in entire Nepal including Kathmandu Valley. Heavy police force is deployed on the streets of Kathmandu to prevent any kind of protests or violence.
The Home Ministry has indicated that many other big officials and leaders may also be arrested in this case.
