The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder direct-injection Hyperion Turbo petrol engine is expected to produce 168 PS of power and 280 Nm of torque
Tata Motors is finally ready to introduce petrol engines in its flagship SUV lineup. The long awaited turbo petrol engine in Tata Harrier and Safari will now be launched on 9 December 2025. This new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder direct-injection engine is part of Tata’s new ‘Hyperion’ engine family.
It first caught people’s attention at the Auto Expo 2023 and since then there is a lot of discussion about its launch in the market. Domestic company Tata Motors wants to fill the gap in its SUV portfolio and give direct competition to brands like Mahindra, Hyundai and JSW MG Motor. This new engine will first debut with the Sierra this month.
After this, the lineup of Harrier and Safari will expand rapidly. The Hyperion Turbo GDI engine is expected to produce around 168 PS of maximum power at 5,000 rpm and 280 Nm of peak torque between 2,000 rpm and 3,500 rpm. These figures put it at par with other modern turbo-petrol engines in the segment, and the engine is capable of delivering good mid-range performance i.e. strong power at moderate RPM.
Tata will offer this engine with both manual and automatic transmission options. Although there is no information about the automatic gearbox yet, there is a possibility that it could be given a 6-speed torque converter or dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, which is also available in the entry-level variant of the Sierra, will not be offered in both the Harrier and Safari.
These SUVs will continue to attract consumers looking for a more performance-based setup. In fact, Tata’s new turbo petrol engine has attracted more attention than the company’s own lineup. According to reports, Jeep is evaluating the same 1.5-litre engine for future updates of the Compass and Meridian. The existing 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine in the Harrier and Safari is sourced from FCA.
Tata currently has the rights to modify this big diesel engine and it is not yet decided whether the updated engine will be available by next month or not. With the arrival of petrol variants, the lineup of Tata Harrier and Safari will become more balanced, giving customers more choices. The new 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit will not only be slightly cheaper than the diesel model in price, but will also attract customers who want a smooth and refined driving experience.
