India has always strived to improve international peace and security and maintain friendly relations between different countries. 1. Panchsheel principle
The principle of Panchsheel is an important component of India’s foreign policy. This principle reflects the values that establish peace in the world. To give practical shape to world peace, Jawaharlal Nehru gave 5 principles of peaceful coexistence which are known as Panchsheel principles. These principles included – protecting the sovereignty and integrity of different countries, not attacking other countries, not interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, etc.
2. Policy of non-alignment
The policy of non-alignment is an important component of Indian foreign policy as well as its center point. Non-alignment means the policy of not supporting any faction in a Cold War or other war-like situation. Thus, the policy of non-alignment is considered a principle of adopting a separate approach in international politics. This policy plays an important role in determining independent foreign policy, and in evaluating international relations on the basis of merits and demerits.
3. Strategic Relationship
The main objective of any country’s foreign policy is to enhance its national interest and the security of the nation. To do this it is necessary for the country to be strategically strong. For this, India has developed strategic relations with various countries and not with any particular country. Due to this, strategic balance is maintained between different countries of the world.
4. Business Relations
India has taken many steps towards establishing better trade relations with many countries of the world. India has made many provisions like ‘Free Trade Agreement’, ‘Preferential Trade Agreement’, ‘Ease of Doing Business’ for smooth conduct of trade between the two countries. Under these provisions, customs duty exemptions are given on various products, regulatory laws and subsidies etc. are simplified.
5. Creation of basic infrastructure
India has helped many countries in building basic infrastructure. The Parliament and roads of Afghanistan have been constructed with the financial cooperation of India. Nepal’s Kosi Project, which is the main source of electricity and irrigation in Nepal, was also established with the cooperation of India. Apart from this, India has also helped other countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar in infrastructure construction.
6. Other collaborations
Whenever various countries in the country have faced any need, India has helped them – be it military help or health aid. The government of Sri Lanka had sought cooperation from India to take action against the terrorist organization ‘LTTE’ and India provided military assistance. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, India provided medical assistance to many countries and also provided vaccines to more than 90 countries.
