This historic decision given by the Special POCSO Court located in Manjeri, Kerala gives a strong message against sexual crimes against women and children. The court has sentenced a mother and her lover to 180 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 11.7 lakh for the repeated rape and sexual exploitation of a 12-year-old girl.
This case was extremely heinous because the girl’s mother herself had handed over her daughter to her lover, which further increased her suffering and mental abuse.
Court’s decision:
Special court judge Ashraf A.M. Gave strict punishment against the accused. Both the accused were found guilty under several sections of the POCSO Act, Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Juvenile Justice Act. This case not only exposes a brutal incident of sexual abuse, but also shows the mentality of a mother who handed over her own daughter to her lover, thereby ruining the life of a little girl.
The main accused, a 33-year-old man, hails from Palakkad, while the victim’s mother is a resident of Thiruvananthapuram. The court has given severe punishment to the accused so that awareness about such crimes spreads in the society and helps in preventing such crimes in future.
Impact of the decision:
This case has become an important example related to sexual crimes against children and women in India. The harsh punishment and just verdicts in such cases indicate that society and law will no longer take such crimes lightly. This step of the judiciary also proves that it is necessary to spread awareness about heinous crimes like sexual exploitation through harsh punishment.
At the same time, this decision has also indicated that the POCSO Act and other stringent laws are being followed properly, which promotes awareness and strict attitude of the society towards crimes against children and women.
