Jaipur, . On the second day of the 29th National e-Governance Conference, a plenary session on the topic ‘AI for Smart Policing and Public Safety’ was organized at Rajasthan International Center on Thursday. The session was chaired by Gopesh Aggarwal, Additional Director General of Police, Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D). He said that with the use of artificial AI, policing is now moving from reactive to preventive form. This has reduced crimes and also reduced emergency response times. He said that at present the police of all the states of the country are using AI. He clarified that AI should not be seen as a substitute for human resources, but as a ‘force multiplier’ in policing.
Policing will become safer with the use of indigenous and responsible AI-
Session panelist Dr. Amandeep Kapoor, Director, Bureau of Police Research and Development, Jaipur said that it is necessary to develop strong security mechanisms to prevent any possible misuse of AI. Discussing in detail on topics like AI, Blockchain, Data Computing, CCTNS 2.0, e-evidence, Agentic AI, Edge-based LLM, Mule Hunting App and Dark Web, he said that these technologies are playing an important role in making modern policing more effective. He said that for safe and widespread use of AI, development of sovereign, responsible and indigenous AI is necessary. He said that BPR&D is working in this direction to provide training and develop necessary systems.
Experts stressed on adopting balanced and safe AI-
Panelist Kommi Kishore, Superintendent of Police, Eluru (Andhra Pradesh) said that in the present times it is necessary for all police forces to be familiar with AI. Referring to various investigation related applications being used by the police, he stressed the usefulness of language translation. He said that the use of AI has seen positive improvement in the conviction rate. He said that amidst the increasing use of AI in policing, it is necessary to adopt it in a balanced and phased manner instead of moving too fast or too slow. Innovation without proper regulation can be risky and it is extremely important to avoid ‘algorithmic bias’ in police investigations. He said the aim of AI should be to make policing proactive, not merely predictive.
Data fusion center will strengthen the investigation system.
Panelist Salman Taj, Director, CDTI, Hyderabad said that most of the data related to policing is scattered on various platforms, which should be integrated and made available at one place through Data Fusion Centre. He said that the use of AI in video analytics can make police investigations more accurate and effective. He described sovereignty of AI data as essential for safe and reliable use.
At the conclusion of the session, there was a dialogue on various topics between the experts and the participants. In the end, Rajasthan Police’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Shri Vijay Kumar Singh honored all the panelists by presenting mementos. The session laid special emphasis on AI-based smart policing, secure digital infrastructure and responsible and balanced use of technology to strengthen modern investigation system.
