Hyderabad, February 18 (). In the recently held municipal elections in Telangana, backward classes have won more than 61 percent of the seats.

Although 28.22 per cent of wards in municipal corporations and 35.25 per cent of mandals in municipal corporations were reserved, backward classes secured 61 per cent of the wards and mandals.

Chairman of Majority Commission Commission G. Niranjan and members Rapolu Jayaprakash, Tirumalgiri Surendra, and Balalakshmi Rangu expressed happiness over the victory in large numbers from backward classes. He said that this is a clear sign of increasing awareness among backward communities.

Elections to 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations were held on 11 February and the results were declared on 13 February.

In the recently held panchayat elections, BC (Backward Class) candidates won 52.75 percent of the seats. These also include general category seats.

He expressed hope that BCs will win in large numbers in the upcoming Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTC), Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTC), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and other corporations elections.

A comprehensive survey conducted in the state found that BCs (backward classes) constitute 56.33 per cent of the population.

Although the state assembly has passed a bill providing 42 percent reservation for BCs (Backward Classes), it is still pending the approval of the central government.

The BC Commission chairperson and members said some people have moved courts to stop the implementation of the 42 per cent reservation.

Keeping in view the seats won by the Backward Classes in the recently concluded Panchayat and Municipal elections, the Backward Classes Commission requests the Central Government to approve the implementation of 42 per cent reservation by including it in the 9th Schedule.

He also requested those who filed cases in the courts to withdraw their cases so that the implementation of 42 percent reservation could be facilitated.
