Kolkata . Political activity is intensifying regarding the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. Meanwhile, opposition leader and senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has raised serious questions regarding the election process. Through social media, he has appealed to the Election Commission of India for intervention, alleging that efforts are being made to influence the electoral process in Kasba assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas district. Suvendu Adhikari wrote on his social media platform ‘X’, “In the statement, he said that in the 149-town assembly constituency, contractual employees have been appointed as sector officers and assistants, which is against the rules. He alleges that this appointment has been done as part of a well-planned conspiracy by the district administration.”
He wrote that this could harm the democratic process. In this regard, the order (Memo No. 93) issued by Returning Officer Purnima Dey on 10 April 2026 has also been mentioned.
Suvendu Adhikari said that the employees who have been appointed as Sector Assistants are working on contract in the ISGPP cell under the Panchayat and Rural Development Department and are currently attached to the Zilla Parishad. Whereas as per the guidelines of the Election Commission, only permanent government employees should be deployed for sensitive election duties, so as to ensure fairness and accountability.
At the same time, another controversial aspect that has come to light in this matter is that designations like “Sector Assistant” and “Assistant Sector Officer” have been used, which are not included in the standard structure of the Election Commission.
Suvendu Adhikari alleges that earlier these same employees were listed as “Sector Officers”, but after objections were raised, their designations were changed while their roles remained the same.
Calling it a violation of the model code of conduct, the BJP leader said such appointments are a threat to free and fair elections. He has demanded that the Election Commission should take immediate action and cancel this order and take strict action against the concerned returning officer.
