Falta. Re-polling has started for Falta assembly seat in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Long queues of voters were seen at the polling stations since morning to cast their votes in the re-election being held at 285 booths in this assembly constituency. Voters gathered in large numbers at polling stations to peacefully exercise their democratic rights. Voting for re-election in Falta started at 7 am on Wednesday. This voting is taking place under tight security cover of 35 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF). A person speaking to said that voting was going on peacefully since morning. According to officials, more than 2.36 lakh voters cast their votes in this election at a total of 285 booths. Currently, there are 6 candidates in the fray in Falta, but among them, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan has already announced his withdrawal from the election. However, his name still remains on the EVM.
In Falta, Debangshu Panda is the BJP candidate, while Congress has fielded Abdur Razzaq Mollah and CPM has fielded Shambhu Nath Kurmi. Two other candidates are contesting as independent candidates. The election results will be declared on May 24.
Voting was held on Falta seat on April 29 in the second phase of the recently concluded two-phase West Bengal Assembly elections. However, several complaints of alleged election rigging were reported from this constituency that day. At several polling booths, EVM buttons bearing the names and symbols of BJP candidates were reportedly covered with white tape.
Based on the investigation, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had ordered re-polling in the entire Falta assembly constituency.
