Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said Assam had been experiencing instability for a long time, but the situation had changed in the last decade as the two-engine BJP government made every possible effort to ensure peace in the state.
Addressing booth-level workers of the BJP in poll-bound Assam, Modi said the government has signed twelve peace agreements with various organizations in the North-East. This address was made under the ‘Mera Booth, Strongest Dialogue’ campaign.
The aim of this initiative was to deliver a direct message to party workers ahead of the elections.
The Prime Minister said BJP workers should remind people how the Congress used to “grab headlines and mislead people by making agreements only on paper”.
He said, “We have seen the period when Assam was burning in the fire of violence. There was a period of instability in Assam for a long time, but the situation has changed in the last decade. Today we can see a new confidence because the dual engine government of BJP has made every possible effort for peace.”
Modi said that during the Congress rule, peace agreements were sidelined and the youth were left to suffer and move towards unrest.
He said, “During the Congress rule in Assam, no agreement with the rebels and student organizations worked. The Congress betrayed the Bodo community.”
“The BJP has worked to establish peace and secure the future of the youth. We are sincerely implementing the peace agreements at the grassroots level. Assam has seen how peace has been established through honest efforts in the last decade,” he said.
Modi said that everyone is working hard for the hat-trick of BJP-NDA government in Assam.
He said, “I welcome the workers of Assam BJP. I am also a worker like you. Whatever responsibility is assigned to me, I perform it very well. Today I got the opportunity to talk to all of you at the booth level. I know you all are busy and you all are filled with the resolve of ‘my booth is the strongest’.”
He said first-time voters need to be reminded of the “misgovernance” of previous Congress governments in Assam and caution them that even the smallest mistake can set the state back.
The Prime Minister stressed that “peace is the primary requirement for the development of any state.”
Modi also asked booth workers of Assam BJP to caution people against AI-generated videos being circulated in the state. Elections for 126 seats of Assam Assembly will be held on April 9. The BJP-led NDA government has been in power in Assam since 2016.
