Big military failures of America: From Vietnam to Afghanistan, know before which small countries bowed their knees

In modern history, the United States is often considered the most powerful military power. Currently, the country is embroiled in a conflict with Iran. This struggle has been going on for more than a month now. With unmatched technology, resources, and global reach, the United States has dominated conflicts on many continents. Yet, despite this, history tells a more complex story. On several occasions, smaller countries with fewer resources have stood up to the United States, forcing it to retreat. Let us know in which wars America had to face defeat.

The Vietnam War is considered one of the United States’ greatest military failures. Despite deploying millions of troops and modern weapons, American forces struggled against North Vietnamese fighters and the Viet Cong. Vietnamese fighters relied primarily on guerrilla warfare; Using dense forests and a vast network of underground tunnels, they launched surprise attacks. As the war dragged on, its losses became increasingly severe, with more than 58,000 American soldiers losing their lives. Mass protests broke out across the country, and public support for the war completely evaporated. Eventually, the US began withdrawing its troops in 1973, and completed a complete withdrawal by 1975.

Following the 9/11 attacks, the United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001. Its objective was to destroy the terrorist network and remove the Taliban from power. This was the beginning of America’s longest war—a conflict that lasted nearly two decades. Despite spending billions of dollars and deploying modern military systems, the US failed to maintain long-term stability in the region. During these years, the Taliban reorganized themselves, and used local support and the country’s difficult geographical conditions to their strategic advantage. In August 2021, US forces withdrew, and within days, the Taliban once again took control of the country.

In the early 1990s, during the ongoing civil war in Somalia, the United States intervened as part of a humanitarian mission. However, the situation suddenly and rapidly deteriorated during the battle for Mogadishu. During this operation, Somali fighters shot down US Black Hawk helicopters. After this, a fierce battle broke out on the streets of the city. The death of 18 American soldiers sent a wave of mourning across the country. This incident aroused great anger among the people, due to which America ultimately had to withdraw its army after some time.

While the whole world was well aware of the Vietnam War, there was another conflict going on in Laos at the same time. The US launched vigorous bombing campaigns and conducted several covert operations to prevent the communist organization ‘Pathet Lao’ from taking over power. Despite all these efforts, ultimately the Pathet Lao were victorious, and America was unable to succeed in its objective. This conflict is often called the “Secret War”.
