CBI seeks cancellation of bail of accused who organized march with Manipur women in Supreme Court

New Delhi. A new hearing on the Manipur violence case has started in the Supreme Court. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding cancellation of the bail granted to accused Arun Khundongbam alias Nanao. This case is related to the Manipur caste violence of May 2023. During that time, a mob had stripped three women and paraded them around. Women were also gang raped. CBI told the court that this is a very serious crime. The accused was involved in this incident in which women were insulted and subjected to violence. The Gauhati High Court had granted bail to two people including this accused in September last year. Now CBI has challenged this bail in the Supreme Court. During the hearing, the CBI lawyer insisted that bail should not be given in such a heinous crime.
On behalf of the victim’s side, senior lawyer Nizam Pasha said in the court that he is presenting the side of the victims. If necessary, the court can appoint a legal aid council for the victims, so that justice can be provided.
The Supreme Court has issued notice to all concerned parties on the CBI petition. The court has sought answers from the accused and other parties. The next hearing of the case will be held later, when everyone’s answers will come.
This incident is one of the many incidents of caste violence in Manipur which are being investigated by the CBI. The Supreme Court had already transferred the hearing of these cases to the special CBI court in Guwahati, so that the safety of the victims and witnesses is maintained and a fair trial can be conducted.
In this case, the accused has also been charged with inciting riots, robbing the honor of women, gangrape and under the Scheduled Caste-Tribe Atrocities Act. CBI says that based on the evidence the accused should not be granted bail, as this is a serious case of violence against women.
There is deep anger among the victim’s families and society regarding this incident. Many organizations had demanded justice. Now this petition is pending in the Supreme Court. Only after the verdict it will be clear whether the accused will get bail or not.
This case is attracting the attention of the entire country because it involves the safety of women and the credibility of the justice system. CBI is trying to ensure that all the culprits are punished and the victims get justice.
