New Delhi. Congress has announced to launch a nationwide public relations and agitation against the India-US trade agreement. Congress General Secretary (Communication) Jairam Ramesh gave information in this regard. The decision was taken on Friday at a meeting of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi along with party general secretaries, state Congress presidents of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra and leaders of the Congress Legislature Party. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sakhu also participated in the meeting. After the meeting, Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh told reporters that the party will start a series of farmer conferences from Bhopal on February 24, which will be addressed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. After this, there will be a farmers conference in Yavatmal, Maharashtra on 7th March. The third conference will be held in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan in March.
Jairam Ramesh told that India-US trade agreement was discussed in the meeting. Congress is of the opinion that this agreement has been made under pressure and its first impact will be on the farmers producing cotton, soybean, maize, fruits and dry fruits. In the first phase, the party will raise the issue in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. After this, this campaign will be expanded to other states also and this issue will be taken directly among the public.
He said that Congress President and Rahul Gandhi in the meeting described this agreement as the second ‘surrender’ of Prime Minister Modi. He reminded that the sudden stoppage of Operation Sindoor on 10 May 2025 was the first ‘surrender’.
Jairam Ramesh said that just as farmer organizations had launched a long movement against the three agricultural laws, similarly Congress will work with farmer organizations to highlight the effects of this trade agreement.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on social media platform ‘X’ that India-US was not a trade deal but a ‘trap deal’ in which the Modi government has compromised the interests of farmers. He said that to protect the rights of farmers, the Indian National Congress will organize ‘Kisan Sammelan’ and take this issue to every village.
