New Delhi, 18 September (). An official of the National Zoological Park said that the wildlife experts from Bareilly attended a high -level investigation on the mysterious death of the African elephant ‘Shankar’ of the Delhi Zoo on Thursday.
The official said that this 29 -year -old African elephant had been showing symptoms of no appetite for a few days, which suddenly fell into its shed at around 8 pm on Wednesday night.
An official statement said, “For further investigation, an expert team of Bareilly’s IVRI, Health Advisory Committee and Representative of the Ministry is doing post -mortem. The body will be destroyed as per rules after post -mortem and necessary samples.”
Zoo director Sanjeev Kumar said, “Shankar was a symbol of strength, understanding and love and many members of Joo were emotionally connected to her. His departure caused a deep sadness to the team, visitors and the entire protection community.”
Shankar was an important member of the National Zoological Park for 27 years, who came from Zimbabwe in November 1998.
The African elephant was a favorite of visitors for its calm nature and royal style and Ju’s employees were also very fond of him.
The statement said that on Wednesday morning it was seen that Shankar was eating less leaves and grass, he also had mild diarrhea, but he was eating other things like fruits, vegetables and concentrations normally. NZP’s veterinary team treated her and animal husbandry staff were constantly monitoring her.
On the same day, Shankar fell at around 7.25 pm and died despite emergency treatment. The statement said that till Tuesday there was no news of any illness or unusual behavior.
The Delhi Zoo run by the Union Ministry of Environment of the Central Government has more than 1300 animals from 130 different species.
Every year, this campus spread over 176 acres, more than 20 lakh nature lovers come.
