Ahmedabad. The first World Yogasana Sports Championship will start from Thursday in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Held at the Eka Arena, the event brings together 400 athletes from over 60 countries to compete in traditional, artistic, rhythmic pairs and team yoga events. The five-day event (June 4-8) will bring together participants from countries such as the US, Ghana, Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan, marking the first global championship for yoga as a competitive sport. He further added, “This platform has brought together yoga lovers from across the world. This is an important milestone on the global sports roadmap for Yogasana. I will also be joining the event through technology at around 6:40 pm. My congratulations to those organizing such an innovative event and my best wishes to all those participating in it.”
In collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of AYUSH, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Gujarat Sports Authority, Gujarat Tourism and Gujarat Yogasana Sports Association, this championship is being considered as an important milestone in the efforts to establish Yogasana as an internationally recognized sports discipline.
Host India will field a squad of 122 members. Athletes will compete in six age categories, Sub-Junior (10 to 14 years), Junior (14 to 18 years), Senior (18 to 28 years), Senior A (28 to 35 years), Senior B (35 to 45 years), and Senior C (45 to 55 years), which will include both men and women.
The competition will include individual events, artistic events and traditional group categories. The organizers will also introduce an electronic scoring system for the first time globally, which aims to bring transparency and uniformity in decision-making.
The championship will be overseen by 32 international judges and 51 national judges. Speaking ahead of the event, Udit Seth, President, Yogasana India, said that this championship will provide a great platform for athletes and will help in taking Yogasana to more people around the world.
Seth said, “It is a great pleasure to see that we are hosting this unique World Yogasana Championship along with more than 60 countries at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad. This is a great platform for the Indian National Team and to take the sport of Yogasana to the world; perhaps this is India’s biggest contribution to the world of sports.”
Dr. Jaideep Arya, General Secretary of World Yogasana, described this event as a historic moment for this discipline.
He said, “The World Yogasana Championships is not just a competition; it is an important moment in the development of yogasana as a global sport. For the first time, athletes from more than 60 countries will come together on one stage to showcase the athletic ability, discipline and art that are the hallmarks of yoga.”
The championship will begin with an opening ceremony on Wednesday. This match will be telecast live on Doordarshan every day from 9 am to 9 pm and will also be streamed on the broadcaster’s YouTube channel from June 4 to 8.
