Once again a war-like situation has arisen in the Strait of Hormuz. America has claimed that it has carried out a massive bombardment on Iran’s military bases. This action has been taken in response to alleged Iranian attacks on US Navy ships. Amidst this military confrontation, a big statement from US President Donald Trump has come out, in which he has warned Iran that if it does not sign the agreement, it will have to pay a ‘heavy price’. According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), US Navy guided missile destroyers were attacked by Iranian forces with missiles, drones and small boats as they were passing through the Strait of Hormuz. America says that it retaliated in self-defense, foiled these attacks and ‘severely destroyed’ the enemy. Trump informed on social media that Iranian drones were burnt in the air and many of their boats were destroyed.
Iran’s counterattack: ‘America broke the ceasefire’
On the other hand, Iran has accused America of violating the ceasefire. According to Iran’s government media, America had earlier attacked one of their oil tankers, in response to which the Iranian army took action. Iran claimed that their attacks with “high-explosive warheads” caused heavy damage to the US ships and forced them to flee the area.
Trump’s warning and nuclear issue
President Donald Trump made it clear while talking to journalists that he will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances. He said:
“Negotiations are going on, but Iran needs to understand that they need this deal more than the US. If they don’t sign, the consequences will be bad.”
Trump also claimed that the ceasefire was still in effect despite the clashes, but that the maritime blockade would continue to limit Iran’s profits from oil exports.
What is the current situation?
Tension is at its peak in the area. On Monday itself, Trump had announced to temporarily stop ‘Project Freedom’ (an initiative to keep the sea lanes open), but the latest attacks have put a question mark on the peace talks. At present, America has said that it does not want to increase tension, but is fully deployed for its security.
