New Delhi . Outgoing Indian Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi said on Tuesday that “indigenous solutions to Indian challenges are necessary.” He stressed that ‘self-reliance’ has become a fundamental requirement for national security and future warfare. In an exclusive interview to , outgoing Indian Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi said that in times of crisis the country should depend on its own systems and resources. He said that indigenous systems are performing well and are becoming an important part of the national security architecture. Responding to a question on the central government’s ‘self-reliance’ initiative and the Army’s support for it, General Dwivedi said, “Self-reliance is now a fundamental requirement for national security and future warfare. In the event of any crisis, the country must have confidence in its systems, its industrial base and its ability to endure long-lasting conflicts.”
He said, “Indigenous systems are performing well and are now becoming the core of capabilities such as surveillance, communications, electronic warfare, precision strikes, information management and operational decision making. Indigenous capabilities are no longer just an ancillary part of military preparedness, but have become an essential part of it.”
Also, he said that modern warfare is changing rapidly and requirements like long-range precision strike capability, advanced weapons, drones and anti-UAS systems will continue to increase in the future.
“The need for capabilities such as electronic warfare, robust communications systems, AI-based decision systems, autonomous platforms and better battlefield intelligence will further increase. Therefore, it is essential that the defense industry remains prepared to meet current and future requirements,” he said.
General Dwivedi said, “We need Indian solutions to Indian challenges because our terrain, nature of threat and operational requirements are unique. Our collaboration with DRDO, DPSUs, private industry, MSMEs, startups and academic institutions is focused on faster testing, better collaboration and early deployment.”
He also mentioned Operation Sindoor and said it proved the Indian Army’s “joint, integrated and future-ready combat capability”. At the same time, the “collective strength” of India’s security system has also been demonstrated.
General Dwivedi said Operation Sindoor has also further reinforced the need to pursue the transformation of the Army as an “integrated institutional process” and “multi-domain integration”.
