Chennai . The Madras High Court on Friday suggested strict SOP for political rallies. At the same time, the court refused to order a CBI inquiry into the stampede that took place last month at the Karur rally of actor-royalty Vijay. 41 people died in Karur stampede. A bench of M Dhandapani and M Jotiraman refused to take action on the petition seeking a CBI inquiry of BJP leader Uma Anandan, but exempted the petitioner that if the investigation is not done properly, he could knock the court. The court questioned the rights of the petitioner in the case and said that do not understand this court as a political arena.
The court said that if the victims come to this court, we will save them. The court asked the petitioner to first allow the investigation into the 27 September incident in Karur to proceed from its current initial stage.
The BJP leader had sought instructions from the High Court to conduct an inquiry into the incident by the CBI and claimed that the deaths were due to alleged government apathy.
The High Court passed this order while hearing several petitions. Some petitions demanded an increase in compensation for the victims.
The bench noticed the Tamil Nadu government’s suggestion to prepare the standard operating process (SOP) in relation to rallies or meetings and not allow the closest events of the state or national highways.
The court suggested that in future when such political rallies or meetings are held at the designated places, the government and political parties should ensure that there is a proper arrangement of drinking water and cleanliness.
The bench also said that exit route and parking facilities should be provided to reduce the possibility of stampede.
The stampede at the TVK party rally has created political controversy in the state. The police have registered a case against the party’s state general secretary Bosey Anand for this incident.
Vijay accused the conspiracy behind this tragic incident, while Chief Minister MK Stalin accused the opposing parties of taking advantage of the tragedies.
