Dhaka. Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh will be held on February 12 next year. Amidst election preparations, the condition of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief and former PM Khaleda Zia remains critical. In such a situation, his son and party’s working president Tariq Rehman will return to his country from Britain on December 25. This information was given in the party’s press conference held on Friday in Dhaka. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party would formally welcome Tariq Rahman Rahman upon his arrival in Dhaka. Actually, Tariq Rehman was arrested during the political turmoil in 2007. After his release from jail in 2008, he went to Britain with his family for treatment and has been there since then.
The country witnessed massive violence during the fall of the democratically elected Awami League government on August 5 last year. After the violent rebellion, many court decisions convicting Tariq Rehman in different cases were overturned.
In some other cases he was acquitted through legal action. After mother Khaleda Zia’s health deteriorated, the discussion of Tariq Rehman’s comeback had gained momentum. Tariq had also announced his return in Bangladesh elections.
The Election Commission has announced the election date at 6 pm on Thursday. According to the election schedule, nominations for the parliamentary elections will be filed till December 29. Scrutiny of nominations will take place from 30 December to 4 January 2026.
January 20 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. At the same time, election symbol allocation and final candidate list will be released on January 21. Election campaigning will be allowed from 22 January to 10 February at 7:30 am.
