United Nations India called for the international community to ensure that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) and other terrorist organizations could not misuse the land of Afghanistan.

India’s permanent representative P. Harish told the Security Council on Wednesday that India is closely monitoring the security situation in Afghanistan.

He said, “The international community should unite and ensure that the organization nominated by the UN Security Council, such as the Islamic State, Al-Qaeda and their colleagues Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, their supporters, do not use Afghanistan’s land for terrorist activities.”

Harish further said that India welcomes the strong condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam by the organization associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, in which 26 citizens were killed on their basis.

The General Secretary’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Roja Otunbayeva, who spoke earlier during the council discussion on the United Nations Assistance Mission (UNAMA) in Afghanistan, warned that the presence of extremist groups is a problem for Afghanistan despite large -scale armed conflicts and a significant decline in violence.

After the return of American soldiers in 2021, the Taliban captured Afghanistan, but most countries including the United Nations and India have not recognized it.

However, Harish said that a new approach to Afghanistan is required.

He said that to deal with the situation after the conflict, any coherent policy should have a combination of encouraging positive behavior and discouraging harmful tasks. Focusing only on punitive measures is unlikely to achieve desired results.

He reported that the United Nations and the International Community have adopted a more subtle approach in other references after the struggle and said that Afghanistan needs a new approach with unused policy means so far to help their people, which are highly needed.

He said that maintaining the status quo is not good for Afghanistan. This is unlikely to fulfill the expectations of the international community for the people of Afghanistan.

He said that India will continue negotiating with all concerned stakeholders.

India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar spoke to Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Aamir Khan Muttki twice. Muttki was scheduled to come to New Delhi this month, but his journey was canceled due to United Nations sanctions, as his travel is limited by these restrictions.

However, recently Afghanistan’s Deputy Medicine and Food Minister Hamdullah Zahid and a top Taliban officer who looks at security and strategic matters (not revealed) visited India.

Jaishankar said that India’s commitment to meet the development needs of the people of Afghanistan is firm. He also mentioned various humanitarian aid given by India to Afghanistan.

United Nations official Otunbayeva said that she hopes to find a way for cooperation with Afghanistan, which gives positive results, especially for women and girls.

He said that under the leadership of the Taliban, there are two types of thinking: one which gives priority to the needs of Afghan people and the other which focuses on creating pure Islamic system. The group that emphasizes the Islamic system has imposed several sanctions on Afghan people, especially women, such as limiting their education and freedom to work.

Otunbayeva said that women were not assisted in the recent earthquake and the United Nations women employees were prevented from going to their offices.

He said that due to such non-practical attitude, the international community is raising the question whether they should support a country whose leaders weaken the interests of their people.
