New Delhi. The Delhi government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is working on a comprehensive, year-long strategy to tackle air pollution, keeping a scientific approach, cutting-edge technology and strong administrative coordination at the centre. In this direction, Delhi Government is exploring the possibility of collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, so that Artificial Intelligence (AI) based air quality intelligence and data based pollution control solutions can be implemented. Regarding this proposed cooperation, the Environment Department is brainstorming on the action plan, institutional structure and phased implementation. Speaking on this initiative, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, we are ensuring that the fight against pollution is scientific and strategic. Now decisions will be taken based on real-time data, accurate identification of pollution sources and measurable outcomes.
He said that the objective of the proposed cooperation is to enable micro-level identification of sources of pollution, scientific assessment of their impact and targeted and time-bound action in various areas. Under this, such systems will be developed which can provide direction to continuous monitoring, analysis, forecasting and action.
The minister further said that pollution control cannot be a seasonal campaign. Delhi needs a 365-day action framework in which technology, governance and enforcement are fully coordinated and every decision is data-based.
He said that a major foundation of this strategy is Dynamic Source Apportionment, through which scientific assessment of pollution caused by dust, transportation, industry, biomass burning and regional factors will be done. This will allow agencies to take action directly on the root causes of pollution instead of general restrictions. The proposed model also places special emphasis on multi-agency coordination, so that municipal corporations, district administrations, enforcement agencies and technical institutions work on a common data platform, where responsibilities are clear and accountability is fixed.
Sirsa said that when all agencies work based on the same scientific evidence, action is swift, precise and effective. Our goal is to move Delhi from ‘firefighting’ to true prevention. The Delhi government is currently taking strict action simultaneously on four major fronts—vehicular emissions, dust control, polluting industries and waste management.
Airborne particles are being controlled through stringent dust norms at construction sites, mechanical road sweeping, anti-smog guns and mist spray systems on electric poles. The action of sealing and closing polluting industries is going on through survey under the leadership of District Magistrate and Divisional Commissioner. At the same time, about 35 metric tons of legacy waste is being disposed every day through bio-mining at all the landfill sites.
