Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday described the BJP’s victory in West Bengal as a “historic moment” for the party and said the development will strengthen the BJP’s presence in eastern and northeastern India. Speaking to reporters, Sarma said Saturday would prove to be an important political milestone for the BJP-led alliance as Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers of about 21 states are scheduled to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new government in West Bengal. “Saturday is a day of victory for us. It is a very important occasion for the BJP and the NDA family, because after the rise of the BJP in West Bengal, almost the entire eastern and north-eastern region will now have either BJP or NDA governments,” the Chief Minister said.
Referring to the incidents of violence that took place after the assembly elections in West Bengal, Chief Minister Sarma expressed confidence that the situation will stabilize after the new government formally takes charge.
“There have been incidents in West Bengal, but I am confident that peace and normalcy will gradually be restored after the new government takes charge from tomorrow. There is no doubt about that,” he said.
Reiterating his stand on infiltration and border security, the Assam Chief Minister said sealing the international border remains the priority of the BJP-led government.
Sarma said, “It is not practically possible to deport 1.5 crore or 2 crore people overnight, but the border fencing will continue and the international border will be completely secured. We will be able to stop fresh infiltration and after that the process of identifying and deporting illegal immigrants already living in the country will continue gradually.”
He said that the government is committed to protecting national security and demographic balance and will resolve this issue within the ambit of law. Strong coordination among BJP-ruled states in the region will help improve infrastructure, trade connectivity and internal security in eastern and north-eastern India.
