The era of rhetoric and accusation in Indian politics is not new. But in the 2025 electoral atmosphere, the kind of challenge the Congress has given to the BJP has created a stir in the political corridors. Congress leaders have claimed that if there is a direct debate between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi, “Modi’s voice will not come out”. This statement not only reflects the edge of opposition politics but also presents the challenge to the BJP to further strengthen its image and leadership ability.

Demand for debate and Congress’s confidence

The Congress has been alleging for a long time that Prime Minister Modi avoids the debate with the leaders of the opposition on the open platform. Now that the call of Lok Sabha elections is intensifying, Rahul Gandhi and Congress have made this issue a weapon of campaigning. Congress leaders believe that during the tenure of the Modi government, there are many questions such as unemployment, inflation, peasant crisis and education system of youth which are necessary to directly ask the Prime Minister. Rahul Gandhi’s image has strengthened as an aggressive opposition leader in recent years. From Parliament to the streets, Rahul Gandhi has been continuously surrounded the Modi government. The Congress says that if the two leaders sit face to face in the debate, then the public will decide who has concrete answers to the issues and who only rests on speeches and slogans.

BJP retaliation

BJP leaders also did not keep silence on this challenge of the Congress. BJP spokespersons say that comparing the functioning of the Modi government to the previous governments of the Congress is enough to respond to the opposition. The BJP argues that under Modi’s leadership, India has increased its credibility globally, economic reforms have been done and the schemes have directly benefited. In such a situation, the challenge of Rahul Gandhi’s debate is only an attempt to make headlines in the media. BJP leaders also say that Narendra Modi’s popularity and acceptance in the public is not a fascinator of any debate. According to him, when the public has been constantly making him Prime Minister, the demand like debate is only a sign of the Congress’ frustration.

Public interest

Interestingly, the public appears excited about such debate. People are discussing the possibility on social media platforms across the country that if Modi and Rahul Gandhi really argue face to face on a platform, to what extent the level of political discourse can change. Some people consider it necessary for democratic tradition, while some are calling it only a ‘political stunt’.
