New Delhi. India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met a US Congress delegation in New Delhi on Sunday. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore was also present in this meeting along with Mike Rogers, Adam Smith and Jimmy Patronis. The two sides discussed strengthening bilateral relations, developments in the Indo-Pacific region and the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Giving information about this meeting, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar wrote on social media platform Let us tell you, earlier on January 18, Foreign Minister Jaishankar had met US Senator Steve Daines and discussed bilateral relations and its strategic importance. Giving information about the meeting, EAM wrote, “It was a pleasure to meet Senator Steve Daines in Delhi this morning. There was a wide-ranging and open discussion on our bilateral relationship and its strategic importance.”
Earlier on January 13, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had spoken to EAM Jaishankar over phone. The two leaders reviewed key areas of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, including civil nuclear energy, trade negotiations and regional security.
Regarding talks with Rubio, EAM Jaishankar said, “Trade, essential minerals, nuclear cooperation, defense and energy were discussed. Agreed to stay in touch on these and other issues.”
On the phone, Rubio congratulated India on the implementation of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy Bill for the Transforming India Bill. Tommy Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department, said that this is a recent law which is part of India’s Nuclear Energy Framework.
“They expressed interest in leveraging this important development to expand US-India civil nuclear cooperation, expand opportunities for American companies, advance shared energy security goals, and secure critical mineral supply chains,” Pigott said.
“They also shared views on regional developments, and reaffirmed the commitment of the United States and India to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Pigott said.
Whereas US Ambassador Sergio Gore called it a positive call. “They discussed the next steps in our bilateral trade negotiations, critical minerals, and a meeting next month. The United States is interested in working on legislation to strengthen civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries,” Gore wrote on Twitter.
