A farewell service was organized on Monday at the headquarters of the United Nations Mission in Abyei (UNISFA) to pay tribute to Bangladeshi peacekeepers who made the supreme sacrifice in a drone strike in Sudan. Six peacekeepers were killed and 9 others were injured in a drone attack on Saturday on a UN material storage center located in Kadugli, South Kordofan province of Sudan. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, while giving information to journalists in New York, said that it is not yet clear who has carried out this attack. The UN Interim Security Force, UNISFA mission, has called it a horrific attack. The dead peacekeepers were bid farewell at a ceremony held in Abyei on Monday. Abyei is an oil-rich area whose ownership has been disputed between Sudan and South Sudan since 2011, when the two countries were divided. The UN Mission for Abyei was established in 2011. Recently, its tenure has been extended by one more year. UNISFA has said that the sacrifice of these peacekeepers will never be forgotten. The UN Mission has expressed its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Bangladesh in this hour of grief and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. The nine injured peacekeepers were evacuated from Kadugli to Abyei on the day of the attack, where they are being treated in the UN Mission’s hospital. According to UNISFA, all necessary steps are being taken for medical care of the injured peacekeepers. new security measuresUN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in his statement has strongly condemned this attack on peacekeepers. UNISFA reiterated the UN chief’s message, noting that attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law, and that those responsible for these attacks must be held accountable. The UN mission said it has taken steps to protect its staff and facilities, including strengthening security measures at the Kadugli logistics camp. Is. In addition, the situation will be kept under constant review. UNISFA’s objectives include: strengthening the capacity of police services in the disputed oil-rich area, monitoring and verifying the withdrawal of security forces from the area, facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and ensuring the safety of the civilian population. A total of 4,000 military and police personnel are serving in this UN mission. Apart from them, civil staff is also serving in this mission.
